Why should we look after our skin?
Skin is our largest body organ, covering a huge 70% of us. It is vital that we look after our skin as we have it for life. It needs to be fed nutrients to help repair damage, stay healthy and to prevent disease.
The way our skin functions is very important and is reflected in our appearance.
If the skin is stripped of its natural oil then the barrier is disrupted making it very vulnerable to bacteria, fungi and viruses which lead to break outs and dry patches.
What is Kelly's Skincare Routine?
I am frequently asked "what is my daily and weekly skincare routine". For many years I've experimented with my skin to see how it responds to certain ingredients.
As a teenager I had spotty skin. When I moved away to University the stress resulted in acne to my forehead. The doctor gave me steroid cream, and I also used "anti- acne" face washes from the high street, all caused further havoc to my skin. Thankfully, I was introduced to Aromatherapy and discovered the healing effects of Plant Oils. Twelve years later and I am happy with balancing my skin to keep break outs at bay, and also to nourish and protect the skin as it continues to age.
Every morning and night I use my cleanser, balancing toner, balancing moisturiser and eye gel. Then twice a week I'll use the exfoliating cream to gently buff away the dead skin cells and once a week I'll use either the red or green clay mask for a deep clean. I do believe it is important to get into a skincare routine both morning and night, and it literally only takes a few minutes. Your skin will be thankful for the love you show it.
Why should we exfoliate?
By using a non abbrasive exfoliant not more than twice a week you:
- Gently polish and refine the skin texture
- Prevents blocked pores and blemishes
- Even skintone and gives a visably smoother complexion
- Increase the softness and radiance of the skin
- Helps prepare the skin for moisturisation
Why is our cleanser so good?
- Formulated to suit all skin types
- Contains plant oils and clay to dissolve the daily grim AND make up
- Use it as an eye make up remover
- Contains aloe vera and Vitamin E to soothe and condition the skin, so after you’ve washed it off your skin will feel clean and soft to the touch
- Firstly it is a gel not a cream for our delicate eye area to absorb the nutrients, cream is too heavy for this area and leads to puffiness
- Arnica helps with dark circles
- Rosehip moisturisers
- Hyaluronic acid, Q10 and Siberian ginseng help to rejuvenate and plump the skin
- Vitamin C and Arctic Blackcurrant are packed full of antioxidants
Which make up do I use and why?
I use mineral loose powder make up, which essentially is crushed up pigments (to give the colour), and zinc oxide (the sun protecting factor (SPF)). It has no relation to mineral oil/paraffin liquidium.
By using mineral make up I’m applying just what I want – to even out my skin tone colouring and I also get the added benefit of the SPF.
What is liquid foundation?
Think of a cream/lotion with the crushed up pigments in it. If you were to read the ingredients then you’ll see that usually the cream is petroleum (mineral oil) based, it will also have some sort of fragrance to make it smell pleasant but as we know, these trigger breakouts and angry, unhappy skin.
So if you have a good skincare regime why put this "coloured lotion" on top of your moisturiser when you can essentially just buff mineral make up into your face.
Make up brushes
I probably wash my brushes every two week. I do this by putting a small amount of shower gel into the palm of my hand then I mix the brush using circular strokes into it (the brush is dry). The colour of the shower gel will turn to the colour of the make up pigment. Extremely satisfying! Then begin to wash out all of the shower gel until the water goes back to clear. Leave them to dry on some kitchen towel and be sure to make sure that the bristles are all straight!
It really is important to wash your brushes because they are home to various germs which will spread from the make up container to your face and vice versa.
This is especially important if you have spots because each time you apply make up to your face, you transfer the bacteria back to the container. If you do have spots, I highly recommend you wash your brushes more frequently, you will definitely notice a difference if you were to wash the brush daily.
Big Tip: Throw away the sponge that comes with compacts, or if you have a microscope handy just have a look at all the bacteria growing in all that foundation on the sponge, it really is yucky! Invest in a good foundation brush instead. If you look after the brush, it should last you years.
