Why Look After Our Skin?
Skin is our largest organ, covering a whopping 70% of our body. It needs to be fed nutrients to help repair damage, stay healthy and prevent disease, as it is our skin that is reflected in our appearance. If our skin is stripped of its natural oil then the barrier is disrupted, leaving it vulnerable to bacteria, fungi and viruses which can lead to skin “break outs” and cause irritation.
Which ingredients should we avoid?
Mineral Oil/ Paraffin liquidium
It is a by-product of the oil industry and therefore cheap to use. It is an occlusive which means it sits on top of our skin like a barrier and doesn’t let anything in or out of the skin and therefore prevents our skin from carrying out it’s normal job. It has no nutritional value.
Sodium lauryl sulphate/ sodium laureth sulphate (SLS)
Extremely effective detergents which produce a lot of foam. Used to degrease car engines, floor cleaners, car wash, shampoo, cleansers, bubble bath and shower gel. They are too damaging to our precious skin and strips all the good oils causing our skin to produce twice the amount of its natural oils in case it is washed with SLS again.
Parabens
Types of preservatives which have received negative press from research studies that have linked them to cancer.
Lanolin
Is animal wax which is found in the fleece of sheep. It is used as a cheaper alternative to plant oils.
Alcohol denat
Commonly used in skincare but it unfortunately dries out the skin and leads to irritation. You’ll find it in toners, moisturisers and even eye gel.
Synthetic dyes or perfumes
Added to make the product look pretty and smell great. However because they are synthetic they are often too irritating for the skin and cause problems.
